A clinical study on the 50 patients with Reye¢¥s Syndrome


Abstract
Clinical and laboratory studies have been done on the 50 patients with Reye¢¥s syndrome who were admitted to I.C.U. of So Wha Children¢¥s hospital during- 2 years from January 1983 to December 1984.
The following results were obtained.
1) The annual incidence of 1984 was two times more than that of 1983, and the monthly incidence was highest in May.
2) The sex ratio of male to female was 1.5: 1. The highest incidence was between 7 and 12 months of age, and most of cases (92%) were under 2 years of age
3) The prodromal illness was present in 68%. The URI was the most common prodromal illness (56 %)
4) The clinical symptoms were disturbed consciousness (100%) vomitting (74%), fever (34%), seizure(22%), hyperventilation (16%), G-I bleeding (12%), diarrhea (10%). The hepatomegaly was noticed in 58% of cases and the mild jaundice was noticed in 6% of cases.
5) According to Lovejoy¢¥s classification, 12 patients were in stage III or above. There was no death in stage I, II.
6) the 8 patients of stage III or above were treated with barbiturate and artificial hyperventilation. Its mortality was 25% (2/8).
7) the mortality was high in patient with the following laboratory findings.
a) ammonia¡Ã300ug/dl
b) GOT¡Ã300U/
c) GPT¡Ã300U/L
8) The average mortality was 10%.
